Situated within the picturesque village of Lympstone, this impressive new-build home occupies a particularly challenging site, both from an engineering perspective and due to its location within a conservation area surrounded by historic properties. Expertly designed by PMR Architecture, the scheme carefully balances these constraints with a confident contemporary response, creating a home that feels both striking and sensitive to its surroundings.

The property features a dramatic cantilevered first floor overlooking an enclosed private courtyard, while the rear of the house opens out towards spectacular views across the Exe Estuary. Terraced gardens have been carefully shaped from the landscape itself, helping the building sit naturally within the site. Sustainability and environmental performance were key drivers throughout the project, with concealed solar panels and integrated heat pump technology contributing to the creation of a highly energy-efficient home.

We were delighted to supply the external oak cladding for the property, which forms a central part of the building’s architectural identity. Oak continues to be one of the most sought-after timber species for external applications due to its exceptional durability, structural strength and longevity. Its dense composition and high tannin content make it naturally resilient to the demands of external environments, allowing it to perform exceptionally well as a long-term cladding solution.

Beyond performance, the oak also plays an important aesthetic role within the overall design concept. To help achieve the architect’s desired finish from the outset, the cladding was treated with the SiOO:X – a product designed to accelerate and control the natural weathering process of timber, allowing the oak to develop a consistent silver-grey patina significantly faster than untreated material. In addition to enhancing appearance, the treatment also helps protect the timber surface from moisture ingress, UV exposure and environmental wear.

The finish ensures the oak cladding seamlessly integrates with the home’s carefully curated material palette of soft grey brickwork, and off-white render, complimenting the anthracite glazing frames and the grey paving. The softened weathered tones of the oak bring clean texture and natural character to the contemporary architecture, while ensuring the building feels grounded within its coastal setting.

The finished project is a refined example of how natural materials such as oak and stone can combine durability, performance and architectural beauty within a modern residential design.
