Reinventing a farmstead with oak Bruton, Somerset

The Newt Farmyard

The Newt Farmyard

by Richard Parr Architects

Over recent years, we have supplied oak to a number of projects across The Newt estate, contributing to the ongoing evolution of this remarkable Georgian country house, working farm and luxury hotel. United by a commitment to craftsmanship, material honesty and a deep respect for landscape, each intervention across the estate carefully balances heritage with contemporary refinement.

Within this wider body of work, The Farmyard stands out as a particularly characterful chapter.

Set in a sheltered combe half a mile from Hadspen House, The Farmyard at The Newt is a full-scale reinvention of a historic dairy farm hamlet. Led by Richard Parr Associates, the project transformed former agricultural buildings into a collection of hotel suites, a restaurant, spa facilities and social spaces, all while preserving the golden patina and quiet romance of the original structures.

Across four key buildings – the Poolhouse, Farmyard Kitchen, The Grain Store and The Garner Bar – our oak plays a defining structural and aesthetic role.

The Poolhouse

A calm, structural presence

The indoor poolhouse forms part of the estate’s spa and wellness offering; a tranquil, light-filled retreat framed by hamstone walls, red brick pillars and generous glazing overlooking the courtyard.

Here, we supplied European Oak for the principal structural beams and ceiling sarking boards. The beams provide both strength and sculptural clarity, while the sarking boards introduce warmth and texture overhead. In a building dedicated to relaxation, the oak anchors the space, bringing a natural softness that balances the masonry and glass.

The material choice reflects the estate’s wider language: authentic, robust and designed to mature gracefully over time.

Farmyard Kitchen

Oak at the heart of the threshing barn

Located in a former threshing barn at the centre of The Farmyard, the restaurant, known as Farmyard Kitchen, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner using ingredients grown, foraged and reared on the estate under the direction of Chef Allan Altschul and his team.

Our oak contribution here was multi-layered: the internal sarking boards add warmth and rhythm to the roof structure; and the feature wall brings texture and depth to the dining space. Outside, the live-edge cladding celebrate the organic character of the timber and reinforces the building’s agricultural origins. Rather than overly refining the material, the natural edge detail preserves a sense of authenticity, echoing the working heritage of the barn while elevating it into a refined hospitality setting.

The result is a restaurant space that feels grounded, generous and materially honest.

The Grain Store

A bespoke oak envelope

One of several distinctive guest accommodations within The Farmyard, The Grain Store required something entirely unique.

For this building, we designed and manufactured bespoke up-and-over slatted oak cladding that wraps continuously across both walls and roof, effectively encasing the entire structure in timber. The system was conceived specifically for this building, creating a seamless envelope that blurs the distinction between façade and roofline.

The slatted form references agricultural drying barns and grain stores, yet its execution is crisp and contemporary. By using oak as a unifying skin, the building retains its rural identity while presenting a striking architectural statement.

Inside, guests experience calm, elegant rooms with original features and pastoral views, while the oak exterior quietly reinforces the building’s sense of shelter and craft.

The Garner Bar

Structural warmth in a social space

The Garner Bar offers an informal, all-day gathering space; a place for serve-yourself drinks and homemade cake, encouraging guests to relax at their own pace.

Here, we supplied structural oak beams alongside internal sarking boards. The beams were carefully selected and detailed to sit seamlessly alongside the original timbers, matching their scale, tone and character so that, although newly introduced, they feel entirely at home within the existing fabric. The internal sarking boards add warmth and texture overhead, softening the space while enhancing acoustics. Together, these elements create a welcoming interior that feels robust, intimate and true to the estate’s longstanding farmstead character.

A unified material language

Across The Farmyard, oak serves different purposes – from structural frames, to interior linings, to feature cladding – yet the material consistently reinforces the same architectural principles:-

  • Respect for agricultural heritage
  • Celebration of craftsmanship
  • Honest expression of structure
  • A seamless relationship between building and landscape

Rather than seeking simple replication, the vision for The Farmyard was one of reinvention – combining skilled restoration with carefully judged contemporary interventions to create spaces that are grounded in history yet wholly suited to modern hospitality.

Through the thoughtful specification of high-quality European Oak across multiple buildings, the design achieves a quiet cohesion: each space distinct in purpose and atmosphere, yet unified by a shared material integrity. In doing so, the project demonstrates how well-detailed timber can move beyond complementing architecture to actively defining it, perfectly balancing performance with beauty, and robustness with refinement.
