The traditional swing seat originates from the USA, but Martin Young, carpenter and founder of Sitting Spiritually brought the idea to the UK back in 2004 and has been crafting swing seats from their base in Lyme Regis ever since. From the early days, inspired by Feng Shui, Martin has designed and built seats that are both comfortable to sit on and beautiful to behold. Many of Sitting Spiritually’s seats are made from Air Dried Oak selected and sawn here at Hewins - we’re very glad to be a trusted supplier.

Sitting Spiritually and the RHS

In 2012 Sitting Spiritually were extremely proud to become the only bespoke swing and bench Makers Licensed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). This endorsement is confirmed by the fact there is now an Oak swing seat supplied by Sitting Spiritually in every RHS Garden, bar one. Close to home here in Somerset is Forde Abbey, featured in the pictures above: from stunning flower displays and a vast range of wildlife, to the most powerful fountain in England, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy in the Forde Abbey gardens - not forgetting a very special Oak swing seat made from Hewins Oak.

The Kyokusen

These stunning seats are available in a variety of styles and one particularly outstanding design pictured here is the Kyokusen (Japanese for "Curves in the air"). Drawing it’s style from a Japanese style gate traditionally found at an entrance to a shrine, it features a piece of curved oak for the swing bar creating a very unique look & feel.

Martin and his team have a long history working with Oak in a challenging outdoor environment and we are glad to be part of this interesting journey.
